LIPOSUCTION

What is Liposuction?

Liposuction, also called Lipoplasty, is currently one of the most popular surgical procedures. Liposuction been adopted by many medical practitioners especially those without formal training in plastic surgery because of the simplicity of the concept of vacuuming unwanted fat from areas of the body.

Through this procedure, the localized, unwanted, disproportioned excess fat from different areas of the body can be removed.  Liposuction can slim the hips and thighs, shape the calves and ankles, flatten the abdomen, or even get rid of a double chin. However, it is important to note that liposuction is not a substitute for weight loss.

Risks on liposuction

Possible short term complications of Liposuction may include bleeding, infection, and reactions to the anesthesia used. Effects such as depressions or wrinkling of the skin, discoloration of the skin, scar tissue, tape burns, asymmetry when comparing one side to the other, and collections of blood (hematoma) or fluid (seroma) under the skin are some of the cosmetic complications that may need additional cosmetic procedures

Rare complications on liposuction procedure  include loss of sensation or movement in a particular body part, skin breakdown, and blood clots in the lower leg veins, which may travel to the lungs and result to pulmonary embolism. Serious infection or shock requiring hospitalization and blood transfusion are very rare on lipo.

If your cosmetic surgeon anticipates a large volume of fat that is beyond the safe limit of a single operation to be removed, he/she will recommend that the overall operation be divided into several stages separated by several weeks or months of recovery. This is advisable in order to safely accomplish the desired goal without having to go through blood transfusion.

Frequently Asked Questions on Liposuction

Q: What is the maximum volume of fat that can be removed in one liposuction surgery?
A: The maximum safe volume of fat that can be removed during Liposuction is five liters.  But the actual safe volume may be greater or less than this amount, depending on the amount of bleeding or other factors such as changes in the patient’s vital signs during the procedure.

Q: How will my skin cope with all of the fat that has been removed after liposuction surgery?
A: Liposuction may need to be combined with another body contouring procedure to remove the excess skin if it has been stretched beyond recovery by years of localized excess fat. If the patient has a younger skin, it has sufficient elasticity and resilience thus having the ability to shrink and contract nicely over the areas where fat have been removed.

Q: When can I shower or bathe after Liposuction?
A: Within 24 to 48 hours afte liposuction surgery, you may shower after the first dressing change. You are not allowed to bathe or immerse the incision sites under water until they are completely healed. Your cosmetic surgeon will instruct you once bathing can be permitted already.

Q: How long will I have to wear the elastic compression garment after Liposuction?
A: To reduce the amount of swelling and bruising in the treated area, plastic surgeons put an elastic compression garment on the patient. This can also prevent accumulation of excess fluid (serum or blood) under the skin and help maintain the contour of the area that has been treated. The elastic compression garment should be worn continuously for the first three to four weeks except while showering. After that amount of time, it can generlly be used for support and comfort during the daytime for an additional three weeks.
